Pot odds tell you whether a call is mathematically profitable. The idea is simple: compare the price you're being offered (how much you must call versus how much you can win) to your chance of winning. If your chance to win is higher than the price demands, calling makes money in the long run.

1. Pot odds & required equity

2. Outs → chance to improve

The pot odds formula

Required equity to call = call ÷ (pot + call). If the pot is $100 and you must call $50, you need to win at least 50 ÷ 150 = 33.3% of the time to break even. If you'll win more often than that, it's a profitable call.

Counting outs (the 2 & 4 rule)

An "out" is any card that completes your hand. A flush draw has 9 outs; an open-ended straight draw has 8. The quick shortcut:

  • On the flop (two cards to come): multiply outs × 4 for your rough % to improve by the river.
  • On the turn (one card to come): multiply outs × 2.

So a flush draw on the flop is roughly 9 × 4 = 36% to get there. The calculator above gives you the precise figure.

Heads upPot odds only consider the chips already in play. When you expect to win more on later streets, factor in implied odds; against aggressive opponents, also weigh their range.
